Type Design

SeeType is a dynamic phonetic font designed with variable font technology that helps readers visualize sounds in the English language. Used with the Google Chrome extension, See Words: Anywhere, SeeType caters to the needs and interests of struggling readers by providing an interactive learning experience centered on visual and audio cues.

SeeType was a winning project in the 2020 STA 100 competition.

I conceptualized and designed the pictographic glyphs for the “ow”, “oi”, “ng”, and “sh” sounds in the SeeType system during my undergraduate studies at Ohio State University. My design process was iterative and included user testing with young kids to assess their understanding of my glyph designs. This project was done in collaboration with my design professor, Oscar Fernández, the See Word team at University of Cincinnati, and the amazing type designers and animators who worked with us internationally to bring our glyphs to life on screen.
